Located at Macau Rua de Cinco de Outubro, a small street named Rua do Infante (The Prince street). Though it is a mini store situated along the pavement corner; I can see all building that surrounded Si Heung were almost worn out. Some abandoned sites even went hollowed out, getting ready for a new five-storey commercial construction top-ups.

The store is approximately less than a hundred feet in size. The lovely nostalgic iron shelve frames and obscure glass cabinets that contained a dazzling array of different snacks varieties on stock. Prices are quite reasonable too, and yet not too expensive. Every time when visiting Rua da Cinco da Outubro is a must visit store, same time supporting the local SMEs.

Founded in 1962 currently run by second generations; starting from apprenticeship to owning this piece of business now. There’s always a saying “Setting up own entrepreneurship is easy, but hard to maintain in the long run”. Facing such strong competition across enormous dry snack market, to stand out within required to maintain high quality, traditional tastes. To get this kind of persistence by hand, all production process must be handled in one row. Managing own factory line, purchasing and selecting, the processing and seasonings, and the final packaging are all “Made in Macau”. Nowadays, many companies insist on using Si Heung peanuts to embrace the taste of Macau.

Peanut buddy must buy

My favorite crispy peanuts, fish skin peanuts, fermented bean curd coated peanuts, and favorite crispy shrimp roe coated peanuts, are all my “must-buy” choices. It doesn’t feel greasy at all, it’s just simply crunchy; When placed in the mouth, the peanut brittle were so unique and crispy, and yet, other manufacturers definitely can’t do it at all. Its extremely freshly made. The taste never went too salty or artificially flavored. All finished peanut products originate from one peanut source, presented in ten different flavored styles, definitely only Si Heung can do it.

There are also other well known, seasonal melon seeds worth to buy. The large-sized melon seeds are easy to disassemble tasting the best insides. Definitely a must-buy choice for Chinese New Year particularly.

Also too, the indispensable salty and wet snacks, such as lemon ginger, preserved king plum, tendril-leaved fritillary bulb tangerine peel, preserved plum in citrus, etc; Anything you think of available on the steel-rack showcase is good enough; roughly estimate items placed on these racks composes hundreds of choices. Gift bags and packaging materials used by Si Heung were designed back in the 60’s look, which are best fit for souvenirs or gift ideas; its also wise to cater special treated guests at home. Honestly, all recommended products are really hard to find in Macau nowadays.

Whilst walking in between the old streets, please do allow yourself to search for nostalgia and the human touch created by this old store. Whenever there is a festive holiday upcoming, I would surely think of Si Heung to help out – meantime, also visit the Sam’s family by the way, praising their professionalism guarding such nostalgic taste of sixties years, present its best tastes, rewarding back all Si Heung peanut fans downtown.
